Chapter Eleven

Burden Lifted

Once the door to Trenton’s in-home office closed, Toya padded to the kitchen. She hadn’t eaten any breakfast, and she and Trenton had burned a lot of energy. She ran her hand across the black marble donning the island in the middle of the kitchen. This room was beautiful, with black stainless-steel appliances with dark mahogany cabinets stained black. The bright yellow decorations and kitchen accessories made the room pop. She wondered if Trenton decorated this room too.

“Let’s see what we got.” She opened the fridge. Trenton had all the fixings for ham and turkey sandwiches. While she was busy pulling out the ingredients, there was a knock on the door. Toya stiffened.

What if Alex found me?

The thought caused her heart to beat faster, and her breathing became a little more labored as her fear ramped up. Then the door to Trenton’s office opened.

“Hey, do you have the key to your hotel room? They are going to pack your things.”

She let out the breath lodged in her throat. Then made her way to her bag lying next to the couch. Toya dug in the bag and retrieved her keycard, handing it over to Trenton.

“Thanks. Room number?”

“1013, at the Drury Towers.”

Trenton took the card from her and strolled to the door.

Toya ran her hand through her tangled hair. Relief rippled through her body as Trenton gave instructions to whoever was at the door. Tears stung the back of her eyes, but she blinked them away, refusing to cry over Alex Graham or feel sorry for herself or the situation.

“Thank you,” she heard Trenton say, and the door closed with a soft snick.

“Are you hungry?” She asked, keeping her back to him as she retreated to the kitchen. Toya didn’t want Trenton to worry about her in any way. He was already doing so much for her.

“I could eat,” he said, following her to the kitchen. Trenton had always been a bottomless pit. The amount of food the man ate when they were together was ridiculous.

She finished putting together his sandwich while he pulled a bottle of wine out of the wine rack and two glasses from the cabinet. She guessed this situation called for a glass of wine.

I wouldn’t mind something a little stronger.

They both settled at the dining table in front of the large bay window. She could see everything from up here. The view was beautiful despite it being in the heart of the city.

“Toya, are you alright?” Trenton asked, pouring wine into their glasses.

She nodded. “Yes, why?”

“Because all you’ve done since we sat down is stare out the window. Something on your mind?”

“The view is breathtaking,” she answered, purposely not answering his other question.

Their conversation fell into old banter. She forgot how much fun they used to have together. And she was reminded of how much she’d missed him.

“I’m glad you came to me.” He wiped his mouth with a napkin and smiled at her.

It was dazzling, and she felt herself falling again. When this whole thing with Alex was over, there was no way she was letting him go again.
